In the packaging of cup yogurt and fermented dairy products, sealing materials are critical not only to shelf life and transportation safety, but also to the consumer’s opening experience. Thanks to its excellent formability, stable barrier performance, and mature heat-sealing technology, 8011 aluminum foil has become one of the most widely used sealing materials in the cup yogurt industry.
8011 aluminum alloy belongs to the 8xxx series and offers outstanding ductility, corrosion resistance, and food safety, making it a proven material for dairy packaging applications.
O temper (soft): Fully annealed, very soft with excellent elongation; suitable for complex die-cutting and stamping.
H14 temper (half-hard): Semi-hard condition with higher strength and stiffness; suitable for high-speed sealing and automated production lines.
In practical yogurt lid applications, 8011-O temper is most commonly used. Its superior softness enables reliable heat sealing and clean, peelable opening performance.
A typical yogurt foil lid structure includes:
PET layer: Provides mechanical strength and optical properties.
Aluminum foil layer (8011 O / H14): The core barrier layer, isolating the product from the external environment.
PE / EVA heat-seal layer: Ensures sealing strength and controlled peelability.
Alloy: 8011
Temper: O / H14
Thickness: 30–40 μm (commonly 35 μm)
Width: 100–1600 mm
Length: Customizable
Excellent barrier properties: Effectively blocks oxygen, moisture, light, and odors, helping maintain yogurt flavor stability and probiotic activity.
Reliable heat-seal performance: Forms a uniform and continuous seal; resistant to refrigeration and transportation vibration, preventing leakage and secondary contamination.
Superior printability: Smooth surface suitable for multi-color gravure printing, clearly displaying brand logos, nutritional information, and marketing content.
Food safety and hygiene: Non-toxic and odorless; compliant with multiple international food-contact regulations and suitable for long-term contact with acidic dairy products.
Environmentally friendly and recyclable: Aluminum recycling rate exceeds 95%, supporting sustainability goals.
Cost-effective: Lower long-term costs compared with plastic lids.
Easy-peel performance: Through precise coating control and material treatment, 8011 foil delivers clean, smooth peeling with minimal residue or coating delamination.
Casting and rolling: 8011 aluminum alloy is cast into slabs, then hot-rolled and cold-rolled through multiple passes to reduce thickness from hundreds of millimeters to the target gauge (e.g., 0.006 mm to 0.2 mm). Rolling temperature and deformation are precisely controlled to achieve a uniform microstructure.
Annealing: The key process for achieving O temper. Controlled annealing removes work hardening from cold rolling, restoring excellent softness and elongation.
Finishing and coating: The foil undergoes strict degreasing and cleaning to reach high cleanliness standards (e.g., "A-grade water brush"). Functional coatings, such as protective lacquers and heat-seal coatings-are applied on one or both sides to meet lamination and printing requirements.
Slitting and inspection: Wide master coils are slit to customer-specified widths and subjected to rigorous inspection for dimensional tolerances, surface quality, and mechanical properties before shipment.
1.Thickness range: Commonly 0.016-0.05 mm. Thinner foil is more economical and flexible but requires higher manufacturing precision to avoid pinholes; slightly thicker foil offers higher strength and more reliable barrier performance.
2.Mechanical properties: For H14 temper, typical tensile strength (Rm) is approximately 120-170 MPa. O temper has lower strength but higher elongation, prioritizing sealing performance.
3.Surface quality: Clean, oil-free, and contaminant-free surfaces are essential to ensure strong adhesion with coatings and plastics, as well as final package hygiene.
4.Earing rate: A key indicator of deep-drawing performance. Lower earing rates (e.g., ≤3%) result in better shape accuracy during lid forming and higher material utilization.
